I really do leave work at work.
I don't collect papers. I don't manage absent work for my students. I don't grade everything they do. I don't check notebooks. I don't give homework. And I say no to unpaid extras I don't actually care about. I care about doing my job well. I've also gotten really intentional about figuring out what actually needs to be my job. Over time, I've built systems that save a few minutes here, eliminate a task there, and put responsibility back where it belongs. None of them will magically give you three extra hours tomorrow. Together, they've completely changed the way I work. That's what I'm giving you here. Not another productivity plan. Not a giant PD course. The actual things I do differently.
Here's exactly what I'm doing differently:
01. SET IT UP. ONCE. Set up systems that keep you from answering the same questions, finding the same things, collecting the same papers, and solving the same problems all year. You'll see how I handle my monthly calendar, absent work, student supplies, turn-in system, and teaching students where to look before they ask me. 02. TEACH WITHOUT CREATING MORE WORK. Quicker warm-ups. Fewer grades. Tackling homework. Addressing notebook checks. And a very intentional line between a student who needs help and a student who needs to use the resources already available to them. 03. MAKE GRADING SUCK LESS. I still grade for accuracy. I just don't create piles of unnecessary things to grade. I'll show you how I set up assessments to grade faster, why all of my quizzes are open-note, what my feedback actually looks like, and how I often finish grading one class's assessments while the next class is taking theirs. 04. PROTECT YOUR TIME. How I use my planning period, stay ahead on copies, decide when I'm DONE for the day, use little pockets of time when I choose to, and decide which unpaid extras deserve a yes and which get a very easy no.
